What Is Interior Handrails?

Interior handrails provide a continuous graspable support along the full length of an interior staircase, allowing users to maintain balance and control during ascent and descent. Many older homes have decorative railings that are not graspable — flat-topped rails, ornate profiles, or rails that are too large in diameter to grip securely — or have handrails on only one side of the staircase. These deficiencies significantly increase fall risk on stairs, which are the most dangerous location in the home for older adults.

A properly installed interior handrail must be graspable (1.25 to 2 inches in diameter), continuous along the full length of the stair run, and mounted at a height of 34 to 38 inches above the stair nosing. It must extend horizontally at the top and bottom of each run and be anchored to resist 200 lbs of force. Our CAPS-certified specialists assess your existing staircase handrails, identify any deficiencies, and install new or supplementary rails that meet ADA standards while complementing your home's interior design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need handrails on both sides of my staircase?

Building code requires a handrail on at least one side of any staircase with four or more risers. For aging-in-place purposes, we recommend handrails on both sides whenever possible, as bilateral support significantly reduces fall risk on stairs.
